Laptops versus Desktops
Without stating the very obvious, desktop computers are much different than laptops in how their components are constructed and put into place. Obviously, you know that a notebook computer is a smaller, mobile computer. It is less powerful than a desktop, but you have the added benefit of mobility. The components of a laptop are very similar to that of desktop computers, but are miniaturized for mobility and power consumption. They also have a built in LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) that allows your viewing in one small package.
The true differences are inside the laptops. They use different memory modules for the RAM (Random Access Memory). The desktop computer RAM is usually a DIMM versus the laptop using a SO-DIMM. The DIMM stands for Dual In-line Memory Module. The SO-DIMM is Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module. The SO-DIMM can support the same level of bits that the desktop computer can. Both can support anywhere from 32 bit data transfers on up to 64 bit data transfers.
The SO-DIMM is more or less equal to the DIMM in power and speed, but since laptops are space constricted, they are smaller and must utilize less space for the same comparable speeds. There is also a different procedure for upgrading notebooks in comparison to the desktop computer. You will also need to know that there is a distinct difference between an Apple memory and that of a Compaq memory. It is important to only buy products that work with your particular model and series if you want the upgrade to work well for your particular laptop.
Once you know the differences between the memory modules, you will be able to upgrade laptops without any problems. Just remember that you are not going to have the big card slots that you would on a desktop computer. Make sure you have the information on hand when you go to buy the new computer memory upgrade modules.
You will save yourself some time and money by being prepared when you go shopping. If you are computer impaired, then you can always take your laptop into a computer repair shop and have them upgrade your computer for you. That is usually the easiest way to go. You can do it yourself as long as you do some research to find out how your particular laptop works.

Today's Tip On Computer Memory
When it comes to learning about a memory module you may need some background information on the components and acronyms that are frequently used. Take for example the DIMM and the SIMM. One is a duel and the other is a single. But do you know how they work? The Central Processing Unit accesses the information stored on the DIMM or SIMM. The faster the CPU can access the information, or if it is more readily available, the faster your unit will run.
